What is Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)?

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder. Its symptoms include problems in social interaction and verbal and non-verbal communication, and restricted,
repetitive patterns of behavior. It is classified as a spectrum disorder because diagnosed individuals present a wide variety of symptoms,
skills, and functional impairments. Simply put, each individual diagnosed with ASD is affected differently.

Though there is still no cure for ASD, early intervention has proven effective
in helping build skills and communication abilities of diagnosed individuals.

ASD occurs to all races and social and economic backgrounds, but males are 5 times more likely to be diagnosed than females.
Currently, 1 in every 68 children worldwide is diagnosed, and most noticeable symptoms manifest in children 2-3 years old.

If you’re concerned about your child’s growth, talk to a pediatrician to have him/her evaluated. Diagnostic evaluation
is done by a multidisciplinary team of experts, including a pediatric growth specialist,
a psychologist, a speech-language therapist, and a functional therapist.

If you’re in the UAE, contact Emirates Autism Society to get support and guidance.
